Cranesbill - Carolina (Geranium carolinianum)
Geranium carolinianum, Carolina Cranesbill, is an annual in the Geranium family that ranges across the lower 48 and into Canada. It prefers partial to full sun and dry, sandy or gravelly soil. The stems and leaves are covered with fine hairs and can turn a vivid red as they mature for great late-summer, early-fall interest in your garden. The leaves are about 3” across, palmate in shape, and usally in five lobes. The small flowers occur in tight clusters and they have 5 pale pink petals. The name Carolina Cranesbill comes from the roughly 1” long, slender beak that the plant’s seeds develop in.
