A native to mesic woods, Hydrastis canadensis (Goldenseal) prefers shade and moderately moist, rich soil. With its single red fruit, resembling a raspberry, H. canadensis grows to 12" tall, with leaves hairy and toothed along the margins. The over collection of the root for medicinal use has led to steep reductions in native populations.
